A candle or lantern was kept burning through the night on Christmas Eve. If it wasn't, people feared a death in the family. Grocers in Yorkshire used to give out candles as a gift specifically for this purpose, to their customers.

 

I have met grief so many times in my life; she has sat with me in the dark and in light. She has walked me through cemeteries and cried with me when I lost pieces of myself in old loves and new ones and ones that died before they began.   Grief has hugged me during my times of loss and followed me throughout my life like a reminder. She keeps me grounded when I think myself into a giant, and pulls me back into my place. Grief. How full of joy and memories. Grief. How heavy a weight.

The reference to “Mary conceived without sin” supports the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary — referring to Mary being sinless, “full of grace,” and “blessed among women”
